Tips on Drawing Cats part 2 by louli9559 Tips on Drawing Cats part 2 by louli9559
The second part. If you need any more help, just ask!

Part 1 - fav.me/d5lmar1

EDIT: I know the calico/tortie thing is backwards, but I'm not changing it since this was uploaded so long ago!

Actually, calicos are black, red, and white while torties are only red and black, but can have minimal white spotting such as mittens or on the chest. The more white on a tortie cat makes the patches of red and black enlarge creating the calico pattern.

I've gotten this response a lot. Thanks for the input, but I'm too lazy to change it now. It's been quite a few years since I posted this.

Awesome! Calico is the one with white though, not tortie.

Actually there are 2 ways of being a fertile male tortie.
1- when 2 embryos merge
2- when a ginger male develops black patches.
1- Ginger OR Black can be passed down
2- ONLY Ginger can be passed down

The calico gene is on the X chromosome. Male torties will almost never happen as males have one X chromosome. The ways you describe are not actually torties, but are mistaken as them. 1 is a chimera and 2 is a somatic mutation, which are very different from tortie.

All natural male torties have XOXoY as their genotype, this makes them infertile cause they they will have one part of both the male and female reproductive system. Most cases they will have testicles and a vagina, while other times they will have ovaries and a penis.

Interesting, thank you for posting this comment! I knew that male calicos/tortoiseshells could be fertile in rare cases I just didn't know the specifics. Thank you!

These were sooo helpful and I loved them! But I thought calico was a white cat with red and black, and tortoiseshells were black with red and white patches? Or is that what you were trying to say?

This is cool! I sort of defied the laws of genetics when I created this calico tom that has kits. ^^; Lol, good thing it's not a real cat! That WOULD defy the laws of science.

thanks.:D well, I suppose it could happen, its just very very rare. Just don't go spreading that around or we'll end up with something that's not so rare. ;)

Cool!
One thing though, Calicos are red, black and white and tortoiseshells are just red and black, I've had both in the past so I know ^^; (They just got flip-flopped in your explanation xD)

It can happen with any white cat, but yes, it is more common with blue eyed cats.
